Since September 2006
It started with two names
Sjaki Singa is a Dutch foundation working in Bali on education, acceptance and self-reliance for people with intellectual disabilities.
Our story
In September 2006 Thijs van Harte and his wife Karin Leithuijser set up the foundation, together with their friends Ronald van den Heuvel, Marijke Lingsma and Rien Gruter.
Sjaki refers to Jacques, Thijs's twin brother, who died in 2002. Tari is their daughter, born with Down syndrome. Us stands for the shared purpose: it only works together.
What began as a small initiative in Ubud grew into seven play-and-learn groups, teen groups at two locations and a training programme for Balinese teachers.

How we work
Western knowledge, Balinese culture
We don't come to tell anyone how it should be done. We work alongside Balinese teachers and parents, and make sure the knowledge stays when we leave.
Parents take part
Parents usually sit next to their child during the class. That way they learn to communicate with and support their child at home — that's where the real change happens.
Demand-driven
The programme has become more and more demand-driven: we look at what the Balinese themselves need, not at what we think is needed.
Locally led
Both locations have their own location manager, responsible for quality, team leadership and external contacts.
Board
Who stands behind it
The board focuses primarily on fundraising, meets every quarter and puts its own networks to work for the foundation.

ANBI & details
Sjaki Singa Foundation is recognised as an Algemeen Nut Beogende Instelling (ANBI, Dutch public-benefit organisation). Gifts are therefore deductible from Dutch income tax.
